Independant Study for Teens



Beginners

Start Stitching (Beginning Sewing):

This course is for the student who has never sewn or for those with minimal skills. Students will learn how to use a sewing machine, and construct a simple garment from a commercial pattern. All sewing will be done in class with supervision. You will proudly wear what you make in this course.

Start Stitching Home Techniques:

This course if for the student who has never sewn or has minimal skills. Students learn how to use a sewing machine and construct simple accoutrements for the home from commercial patterns. All is sewing done in class under supervision. Your home will proudly display your stitching talents.




Intermediate

Sew Like A Pro:

Learn all the essentials for a professional finish. Students will learn how to line skirts, insert zippers and complete comfortable waist bands. Blouse techniques will include a lined yoke, convertible collar, continuous bound plackets, buttons and buttonholes.

Eliminate the Tatters
(Adult Construction):

Learn construction techniques of an unlined jacket with a shawl collar and a simple lined dress. Techniques include: piping; lined patched pockets; shoulder pads; corded buttonholes; and invisible zippers.

Knits:

Tame this new age fabric. Special techniques include knit construction, seam finishes, stabilizers, buttonholes and more.




Advanced

Handmade not Homemade
(Tailoring):

Building a suit jacket from the inside out! This detailed class contains classic and speed tailoring techniques, including layered interfacing, pad stitching, catch stitching, shoulder pads, bound buttonholes, single and double welt pockets.

Perfect Pants:

Using pattern drafting software we construct a custom pair of slacks and a pair of pull on pants. No more “plumbers” pants here!.

Precision Sewing:

This is a supervised sewing class where advanced students can work on special finishing techniques to start or complete new projects. Advanced students are given assistance in custom fitting.




Specialty Classes

Lingerie for Lovers
(Intermediate):

Students will learn special techniques of customized lingerie, including elastic application, appliqué and special lace techniques.

Sensational Serging
(Intermediate):

Become a serging queen! Starting with inside and outside corners students use their own serger to learn all about tensions, roll hemming, and flatlocking. We construct a garment a week.

Duct Tape Doubles
(All levels):

Yet another use for duct tape. We make a dress form that is exactly you. You will be able to try on your garments as you sew without doing the sewing room “strip down”.

Smocking:

Learn the beautiful hand work of smocking. We start with a pillow top as a sampler.

Hand Embroidering:

Embellish your garments and projects with lovely chain stitches, lazy daisies, French knots, leaves and boullion roses. This is what grandmother forgot to teach us!

Sewing Escape Weekends:

Arranged according to our class needs. Local fabric stores see us often.

Field Trips:

Historic Rugby, Tennessee is usually our destination for this very casual weekend of sewing. Each year we choose a different project. Intermediate students love this bonding time.

Contruction of Children's Clothes
(Advanced):

This classic extensive program includes pattern drafting, construction methods and details unique to children’s clothing. The student will draft custom patterns to fit their child. As students advance, heirloom sewing and smocking will be added to the course.




Kidz

Kidz Can Sew (Beginner):

This is an afternoon class for the child ten and up. The student will learn how to operate a sewing machine, read a pattern and construct simple garments. Students progress at their own speed and proudly wear home their creations. All sewing will be done in class on machines provided.




Teens

Independant Study for Teens:

For the teen that loves to sew, this year long after school program covers all of the essentials of sewing. We construct custom fit prom dresses in the spring. Some of the local high schools give these students high school credit for their efforts.



All classes are organized in progressive units and offered on a rotating basis. A unit is one month, containing four classes. Each class is three hours long.
