Roll'em, roll'em, roll'em!

What do you do when you have a slinky silk garment or a very sheer cotton garment that needs a very delicate couture edge? You hand roll the edge! Yes, a hand rolled hem is just gorgeous and is not difficult to accomplish. Typically, the fabric is 100% silk or 100% cotton. Anything that has poly is almost impossible to roll hem by hand.

Here are the steps:

1. Even out the edge to be stitched.

2, Press over a small amount of the fabric to the wrong side of the fabric (as in a hem). When I say small, I mean small--1/8" ish. This amount depends on the thickness of the fabric.

3. Thread up a small, thin needle with a single thickness of thread.

The attached video was taken by a student this morning. I think you will be able to understand this technique from the video with the above prep. Let me know how it works for you. Happy rolling!
